I do believe strongly that bridging differences in important in todays schools. I have been teaching for ten years and over these years I have experienced heated discussions in the principals office between two groups of kids intolerant of each others cultural difference. There have been fights because of skin color, cultural beliefs, and gang activity. Many of our students are not being taught tolerance and diversity at home and therefore, they bring these opinions to school and infiltrate their beliefs into their peers. Unfortunately, the incidents in Jena, Louisiana do not help the situation. I feel that a program that teaches diversity and tolerance is necessary.
