PBS News Hour hosted a session this morning about their work with student journalists. Over the past year, the organization has been piloting a program called Student Reporting Labs that teams up PBS affiliates with local schools to mentor student journalists. The students then learn how to create their own pieces of digital journalism about issues affecting them.
For instance, a group of students in Texas created a video about the educational struggles of undocumented students. Take a look:
One student who participated in the program attended the session. She said that after producing her own pieces of journalism, she is much more critical of the media she now sees. “I look at news and media differently now,” she said. She also mentioned that she has begun regularly reading the news, something she did not do before taking the class.
The first year of Student Reporting Labs produced a whole host of student-created videos as well as a full curriculum, all of which are available online.
