Gray named two newcomers to the city to serve in education roles in his new cabinet, but Kaya Henderson, a former deputy under Michelle Rhee, will remain interim chancellor of D.C. schools for now, despite local news predictions that she would be named to the position permanently today.
De’Shawn Wright, a partner of the Newark Charter School Fund and former senior adviser to Newark, N.J. Mayor Cory Booker, will replace Deputy Mayor for education Victor Reinoso.
Hosanna Mahaley, a former chief of staff to Education Secretary Arne Duncan when he headed Chicago public schools, will be the head of the city’s Office of the State Superintendent of Education. The OSSE manages federal grants programs and oversees assessment. Kerri L. Briggs, a former federal Education Department official, resigned from that post in September.
