Deputy Chancellor Eric Nadelstern, who city insiders thought might be a candidate for the top job at the 1.1 million-student district, announced today that he is retiring after 39 years in the school system. His last day will be Jan. 28.

In his latest position, Nadelstern was deputy chancellor for the division of school support and instruction and top aide to former chancellor Joel I. Klein, who left to work for Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp.

Nadelstern began his career as a teacher in the Bronx, then moved on to a series of principal and central office postings. He was passed over for the top spot in favor of former publishing executive Cathleen P. Black, who started work in January. Her appointment was contingent on her appointment of a chief academic officer, and she chose Shael Polakow-Suransky, another deputy chancellor.

The division that Nadelstern headed will merge into a new division of academics, performance and support, which will report to Polakow-Suransky.
