JoAnn Bartoletti, currently the executive director of the New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association, will become the executive director of the 26,000-memberNational Association of Secondary School Principals when Gerald Tirozzi retires this summer.
Bartoletti has been head of the 7,400-member association since 1991 and interestingly, part of her work has been in developing a certification path for professionals from non-traditional backgrounds to become principals. According to the press release announcing her selection, that process has greatly expanded the ranks of competent school professionals available to lead schools.
NASSP is in the process of reaching out to people other than principals who serve in a school leadership capacity, according to a story I wrote earlier this year. I’m sure Bartoletti will continue that work.
Last May, Tirozzi announced his intention to retire. He has served as a principal, the superintendent of New Haven, Conn. Public Schools; Connecticut commissioner of education; and U.S. assistant secretary for elementary and secondary education from 1996 to 1999.
