The Broad Center for the Management of School Systems, which manages the Broad Superintendents Academy and the Broad Residency in Urban Education, has added four people to its board of directors.
- Former Tennessee Rep. Harold Ford, Jr., who served five terms in Congress and was chairman of the Democratic Leadership Council. Ford is currently managing director and senior client relationship manager at Morgan Stanley and professor of public policy at New York University’s Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service.
- Paul Pastorek, the former Louisiana state superintendent of education and former president of the Louisiana State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. He is currently chief counsel for the aerospace and defense contractor EADS North America.
- Andrew L. “Andy” Stern, a senior fellow at Columbia University, who served 15 years as as president of the 2.2 million-member Service Employees International Union, the nation’s second largest labor union.
- Lawrence H. Summers, president emeritus of Harvard University, who was a top economic adviser during the Obama and Clinton administrations. In the Obama administration, he was director of the National Economic Council. He has also served as secretary of the U.S. Treasury and vice president of development economics and chief economist of the World Bank.
The 16-member board also includes Jean-Claude Brizard, the chief executive officer of Chicago Public Schools and a graduate of the superintendents academy; Wendy Kopp, the founder and chief executive officer of Teach for America, and Margaret Spellings, the former U.S. Secretary of Education.
The board of directors provides “strategic counsel” to the Broad Center relating to the management of two signature initiatives: the superintendents academy, which recruits and trains potential urban school chiefs, and the residency, a two-year program which places professionals in central office management positions.
