Three Urban Districts Lauded for Strong Governance, Strategic Vision
The three districts will be honored this week in Phoenix, where the Council of Urban School Boards of Education will gather from Oct. 1 to 3 for its annual conference. This year's conference theme is "Where do we go from here? Excellence, Equity, and Unity."
The Council cited strategic vision, good governance practices, and "uncompromising" commitment to boost student achievement as among the reasons the three panels were selected for the honor known as the Annual Award for Urban School Board Excellence.
"These school districts have made notable progress in raising student achievement and engaging the community while confronting some of the most challenging conditions in public education," Van Henri White, the president of the Rochester, N.Y., school board and chairman of the Council of Urban School Boards of Education steering committee, said in a post on the organization's website.
"Their success shows that strong local leadership, practicing the best in school governance practices, [is] a powerful force for positive change in public education and is a necessary component to preparing all students for future success after high school," he said.
The districts will receive $2,500 and will share their best practices with the community.
