A Texas superintendent is the new president of the AASA, the School Superintendents Association, the national organization that represents school district leaders.

Alton L. Frailey, the superintendent of the Katy Independent School District, replaces David R. Schuler, who heads High School District 214 in Arlington Heights, Ill.

Frailey has been part of the organization’s executive committee since 2011. He’s also a member of the Texas Association of School Administrators.

He’s been superintendent of Katy ISD since 2007 and has also served as a superintendent in DeSoto, Texas, and Cincinnati.

Daniel Domenech, the AASA’s executive director, called Frailey “an educational leader in every sense and a champion for children on the national stage.” Domenech said Frailey will be “a major asset” as the organization works to strengthen the impact of the superintendent’s voice in Washington.

Frailey said he was “humbled and honored” to take on his new role.

Gail Pletnick, the superintendent of Dysart Unified School District in Surprise, Ariz., was also sworn in last week as the organization’s president-elect. Pletnick was profiled in 2014 as one of Education Week‘s Leaders To Learn From for her emphasis on personalized learning.
