Wake County groups are calling into an investigation into the ouster of former superintendent Anthony Tata.

Efforts to improve schools through "turnaround" efforts like those supported by the federal Student Improvement Grant (SIG) program are based on "faulty evidence and unwarranted claims," says a brief released Monday by the National Education Policy Center, an education research organization based at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The brief includes a critical review of current research on and anecdotal evidence from turnaround programs and makes recommendations for what a more democratic process for school turnarounds.

Tony Tata, the former U.S. Army brigadier (and novelist) who has been the superintendent of the Wake County, North Carolina school district since January 2011, was removed from office by the district's school board last week.
