Janice Jackson, the chief education officer in Chicago, will ascend to the top job after CEO Forrest Claypool quit Friday. Jackson becomes the third chief of the city's schools in two years.

The Normandy school district lost its accreditation in 2013, and the state took over the academically and financially challenged school system in 2014.

The Philadelphia School Reform Commission voted to dissolve itself, the first step in ending 16 years of state control of the city's school system.

Johan Uvin, a former acting assistant education secretary, and José Muñoz, who previously led a community schools initiative in New Mexico, are part of the new leadership team at the Institute for Educational Leadership.

The Rural School and Community Trust and the AASA, the School Superintendents Association, say the partnership will allow the two groups to expand their reach and play off each other's strengths.

The Dallas school district, which had more than 4,000 homeless students last school year, is turning one of its unused school buildings into housing for high school students who live in parks, cars, and abandoned buildings.

Many of the new students attended charter schools that have since closed or the former Education Achievement Authority, the former state-run system, according to the Detroit Free-Press.

The school principals, who all lead Blue Ribbon Schools, will be honored in Washington, D.C., in November.

The "Students at the Center Challenge," which was announced Monday, will award planning grants of up to $150,000 each to 10 communities to support "student-centered" learning systems.
