Add New Jersey to the list of states that have now seen their waivers from the No Child Left Behind Act extended. The Garden State got word from the U.S. Department of Education Friday.

So why did it take so long for New Jersey to get approval? The letter doesn’t say for certain, but it does mention that New Jersey still needs to fix a problem identified in its monitoring report. Specifically, the state needs to explain exactly what it’s doing to intervene in Title I schools that aren’t bad enough to be in the “priority” (worst schools) and “focus” (other struggling schools) categories, but are not cutting the mustard when it comes to children in other subgroups (like English-language learners and students in special education) or that are missing graduation rate targets.

The Garden State is not eligible for a special, thanks-for-staying-on-top-of-teacher-evaluation longer waiver renewal.

For those keeping score at home, this leaves just New Mexico and Louisiana waiting on their extensions. It’s a pretty safe bet that the turmoil in Louisiana around the common-core standards is the hold-up, but what’s going on in the Land of Enchantment?
