After six years in Arlington, Va., public schools, Education Secretary Arne Duncan’s two children will transfer to a private school in Chicago, a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Education said Thursday.

Duncan, who leads the nation’s public education efforts, “remains committed to his work in the Cabinet and will continue to serve at the pleasure of the President,” spokesperson Dorie Nolt wrote in an email. He plans to remain in DC and commute to Chicago on the weekends.

The children will attend the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, where Duncan himself attended. President Obama’s daughters, Malia and Sasha Obama, also attended the lab school before moving to the White House; both currently attend Sidwell Friends, a private school with campuses in Maryland and Washington D.C.

Duncan’s wife Karen, who previously worked at the Chicago school, plans to return, Nolt said.

Duncan, previously the chief executive officer of Chicago Public Schools, is one of just two cabinet members who have remained in their original roles since the beginning of the Obama presidency. The other is Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.
