Fresh off a stunning blow to Hawaii's Race to the Top efforts, Gov. Neil Abercrombie pledged to make good on his state's education reform promises--with or without the help of the state teachers' union.


Look for education to be one of the policy areas highlighted by President Barack Obama as he delivers his annual, nationally televised address.


Newt Gingrich said during tonight's NBC debate that he wouldn't veto DREAM Act legislation, but would work for a "signable version" that allowed only those who enter the military to work toward citizenship.

By a 2-1 margin, Hawaii's teachers rejected a contract that would have created a new teacher evaluation system in line with the state's Race to the Top promises, further jeopardizing the state's $75 million award.

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, in a wide-ranging interview, talked about a new Race to the Top for districts, his department's waiver plan, ESEA reauthorization, and his desire to stay on as secretary through a second term if Obama is re-elected.

The former governor has the longest roster of education advisers among the GOP candidates. And he has a record in the Bay State of championing standards-based reform.


Generally speaking, groups that represent school officials see the draft as a good starting point. But advocates that look out for particular groups of children, such as students in special education, are really unhappy with the draft.
