Colleges hoping to get the attention of prospective students should pay close attention to shifting technology habits and consider increasing their presence on Twitter, according to a survey of college-bound high school juniors and seniors.

While Facebook is still used by 67 percent of students surveyed, that’s a 12 percentage-point drop from last year, the September issue of eCampus News reports. Use of YouTube dropped from 62 percent in 2012 to 32 percent in this year’s survey. Google Plus engagement by young people also declined from 20 percent last year to 5 percent.

At the same time, students are more active on Twitter with nearly 30 percent using the social-media site, up 1 percentage point from last year. Nearly 15 percent of students said they were active on Instagram, which was new to the survey this year.

The findings were based on a survey of 2,000 students and compiled in the 2013 E-Expectations Report conducted by Noel-Levitz, OmniUpdate, College Week Live, and the National Research Center for College & University Admissions.
