English-Language Learners Closed Out of a College-Prep Curriculum

See my other blog, Learning the Language, for news about a study of California schools released by the National High School Center that indicates English-language learners don't have the same access as other students to a college-preparatory curriculum.

Have you seen some of the programs these kids get placed in? Especially if they are separated in some way from the general population. When districts develop bilingual programs or structured immersion programs the programs are not placed in the schools with the best reputations but often the worst. Almost strictly the worst. Other better smaller schools often make their schools off limits to the ESOL students "until they're ready." Better for students to get out of the large urban districts as soon as possible and before students adapt to the rough urban lifestyle which often entails sloughing off at school.
