Those of you who have been waiting for the SMARTER Balanced Assessment Consortium to release the math-content maps and specifications are being asked to be a little bit more patient. The consortium has delayed the release by a week, until Aug. 29.

SMARTER Balanced, as you might recall, is one of the two big consortia of states that are working to design assessments for the new common standards. Earlier this month, it released content maps and specifications for English/language arts, which outline the kinds of evidence students will have to demonstrate to show they’ve mastered the common standards in that discipline. The coming document in math will do the same thing.

Earlier this month, we wrote about these content specifications along with draft content frameworks released by the other assessment consortium, the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, or PARCC. We said that these sorts of documents are of interest because they start to show the consortia’s visions of what teaching and testing on the standards will look like.

You can see the timeline of release, public comment, review and revision for these content specifications on SMARTER Balanced’s website. They’re currently in Round 1 on both the math and ELA, which means each is being released for the first time for public comment. They will be re-released for a second round of input and revision before finals are issued in both subjects in October.

Meanwhile, PARCC is accepting comment on its draft content frameworks in literacy and math until Aug. 31.
