Nebraska Students Create Civics Game

Three Nebraska high schoolers, disheartened by their classmates’ lack of knowledge about civics, have created an online quiz to help other high schoolers learn about the subject.

The World-Herald News Service reports that the three girls were inspired to learn more about history by a trip to Washington. They encouraged five schools in their area to administer the test taken by people hoping to become naturalized U.S. citizens to their juniors and seniors. Four-fifths of the test-takers failed.

So the girls created a quiz that pulls from the citizenship test and includes other questions about Nebraska’s history and government. (Questions like: Which of the following is one of Nebraska’s U.S. senators?) They’re also talking about partnering with the Joe Foss Institute to advocate for the state to require high schoolers to take the test as a graduation requirement.

We’ve reported that the Joe Foss Institute is planning to continue to advocate for more states to require the citizenship test. But this is the first we’ve heard of students pushing for the requirement. Have you encountered other states where students are pushing for the citizenship test?
