Data Quality Campaign Maps Gaps in Early Childhood

Yesterday, the Data Quality Campaign released its first evaluation of state early childhood education data systems.

The group found that while most states collect significant data on their youngest learners, the information is collected by funding source and not tracked longitudinally by student. These data gaps leave policymakers unable to answer basic questions like how many children in a state receive some form of early education or how qualified are the staff working in early childhood programs.

First among its 10 core recommendations, DQC proposes states create a unique identifier for each student, starting in early childhood, to permit longitudinal tracking across the pre-K, K-12 and higher ed spectrum.
