With many young children cut off from Head Start programs due to the sequestration, their parents, caregivers and school administrators often wonder where to turn for aid.

Greatnonprofits.org can help.

The website catalogs 1.4 million organizations by city and ZIP code and offers some 140,000 reviews of the groups from different vantage points including the clients served, donors, volunteers, board members, and the public.

The website aims to be a “Zagat” for the world of nonprofits, writes CEO Perla Ni on greatnonprofits.com, whose childhood health care and clothing came from her community’s nonprofits.

For example, readers will find listings for Kids in Need—a nonprofit that gathers school supplies in Dayton, Ohio—as well as for Kensington, Md.-based Parent Encouragement Program, Inc. which helps support families in their raising of kids, and the Cradle, an adoption center in Evanston, Ill.

So, while the sequestration--across-the-board budget cuts which affect many federal programs over the next decade--may still feel harsh, at least there’s a way to find helping hands.
