Child Trends, a Bethesda, Md.-based research center, has scoured available public resources to develop a statistical picture of the 4 million children starting kindergarten this year. These children are, in general, “happy, eager to learn, resilient, and have affectionate relationshps with their parents,” said David Murphey, a Child Trends senior researcher. They are also more racially and ethnically diverse compared to the children starting kindergarten 10 years ago, more than twice as likely to be receiving food assistance, more likely to have seen a dentist in the past year, and more likely to live in neighborhoods their parents describe as safe, statistics show.
