Families in the city of Denton, Texas, can now access a series of free, daily web-based videos showcasing age-appropriate activities to help them ready their children for kindergarten.
The ReadyRosie program, a locally-developed series, was launched earlier this fall to reach at-risk children and their parents, said Kevin Roden, who sits on the city’s council. The program is available in English and Spanish, he said.
The city, located North of Dallas (and just up the road from my town of Flower Mound) is the home of many immigrants from Mexico and South America. Some 121,000 people live there.
“This way, we can reach the kids by helping to make better parents,” Roden said.
The program is just one strategy being embraced in an attempt to improve access to some forms of early-childhood education when there is no revenue stream, he said.
Last year the city partnered with the United Way, the school district, several churches and nonprofits to find new ways to reach at-risk families, he said.
That’s good news for those of us who live in the Dallas Metroplex—and for Texas as a whole.
