‘Ellen’ Show Has a Surprise for Maryland School, Teacher

Ellen Degeneres had a surprise in store this week on her syndicated daytime show for a Maryland teacher and elementary school.

Degeneres, whose “Ellen” show frequently sends crews to carry out surprises and to shower gifts on unsuspecting fans, sent a crew to Elmer Wolfe Elementary School in Union Bridge, Md.

Carlie Flanders, a 1st grade teacher, was told the TV crew in her classroom was there for some other purpose before Degeneres herself called the teacher’s cellphone, all captured by the show’s cameras.

“Like a lot of teachers, Carlie does amazing things for her students,” Degeneres said on her April 16 show. The host conducted a quiz of the students in Flanders’ class, then told the teacher the school would get $20,000, courtesy of a sponsor. (You’ll have to watch the clip to find out which one.)
