Watch Out, Elizabeth Green, Erin Einhorn, & Jenny Medina!!!

NYC education reporters take note. Straying from his Code Blue demeanor, Mayor Mike proves that he will devour you (without checking your calories) if you accuse him of "maintaining" anything - about NYC schools or otherwise. That's a shame, because this has been a blockbuster school year for "maintaining" in NYC. (Greatest hits: here, here, and here.)

In the clip below, a Newsday reporter says, “Mayor, you maintain that..." Bloomberg cuts him off with: “Maintain is a word that I don’t think is appropriate, sir. The next time you have a question and want to insinuate that I lie, just talk to the press secretary. I don’t think we have a question for you.” (Via the Daily Intel.)

I guess you can tell that Mayor Mike's degree from Johns Hopkins was in Electrical Engineering, and not in the Humanities. If he'd taken a few more humanities courses, perhaps he'd have learned the meaning of the verb "maintain," which, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, when used with the clause "that," means to affirm, assert or contend. No insinuation of lying in the definition, as best as I can tell. Amateur psychologists (and is there a blogger who isn't one?) might wonder why he would project an insinuation that he was lying onto what might well have been an innocuous question.

The Mayor MAINTAINED in his recent New York city budget speech " ...we have more tourists visiting the city than other places in the U.S. because the crime rates are down, our schools are better..."

Pray tell educational policy experts, what is the correlation above?

And I suppose England's grant-maintained schools were just a big lie.

skoolboy, you are having way too much fun with this. i, on the other hand, maintain that i am working on our paper.
