Whoops, They’re Out: Common “College and Career Ready” Standards

They weren’t supposed to be out this soon, but there they are.

The National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers were planning to release the first draft of their “college and career ready” standards in English and math in August. But an early draft was posted yesterday on the Core Knowledge blog, and the buzz began.

We blogged about it over at Curriculum Matters yesterday, and wrote a story about it today.

You might remember that this is the first piece of the project to draft common standards in math and English. The college-and-career-ready piece sets the end point; then they plan to work backwards from there, mapping grade-level standards.

The draft that’s now—unexpectedly—public hasn’t incorporated any of the scads of feedback coming in on yet. A revised version with the first wave of feedback will go up on www.corestandards.org in mid-August. Then there will be more feedback, and it will be revised again.

But for those of you in the “high school space,” it’s worth taking a look at now, in its early stages. Go to our story and click on the three links that take you to the preamble for the standards, and to the English and math standards themselves. It’s an interesting start in a dialog sure to get even more intriguing. Especially in the preamble, note all the references to “college and career ready,” and how those are defined.
