An interesting tidbit out of Texas that I missed somehow:
The state’s commissioner of education, Robert Scott, thinks that one way to battle the high school dropout problem is to choke off the dropouts’ job market.
He made this suggestion after the Texas Association of Business criticized the state ed department for underreporting the number of students who leave high school before earning diplomas. Mr. Scott said that the business community could help the situation by refusing to hire dropouts.
The association responded by saying that, uhh, they don’t think that strategy would work so well.
The Dallas Morning News story has gotten a lot of buzz. One of its editorial writers weighed in on the kerfuffle as well.
A workplace boycott of dropouts? That’s a new one on me.
