Urban and minority education expert Joyce E. King has been named the next president-elect of the nation’s largest education research organization, the American Educational Research Association.

Ms. King, a professor and chairman of urban teaching, learning, and leadership at Georgia State University in Atlanta, served as chairman of the Washington-based AERA’s International Relations Committee and its Commission on Research in Black Education, and edited the commission’s 2005 book, Black Education: A Transformative Research and Action Agenda for the New Century, which argues that education research should stop focusing on black students’ deficits without acknowledging strengths.

Ms. King will take over from the 2013 AERA president, Barbara Schneider of Michigan State University, in April 2014. The group’s officials have a full year of planning as president-elect before taking over leadership.

“Her extensive participation with AERA and her knowledge of the Association position her well to lead,” said AERA Executive Director Felice J. Levine, in a statement. “We look forward to her continued contributions to AERA and to the field of education research.”
