Caffeine Culture: Coffeehouses in High Schools

My eyes were not opened to the pure joy and energetic powers of a cup of coffee until I was a young adult working at a daily newspaper. Purely out of survival, I began consuming coffee throughout each day and the habit has continued for almost two decades.

But I have serious reservations about making coffee easily available to high school students, as is being done in coffeehouses now setting up shop in high school libraries. See "High School Libraries Luring Students in with Coffeehouses." The idea is to entice more kids to visit the library.

Sure, my As and Bs (and a C here and there) in high school would have been transformed into all As if had been introduced to the energetic powers of coffee as a teen. Well, at least that's what I think now.

But what about the long-term health implications? Encouraging consumption of an addictive liquid? Stomach problems? Sleep problems possibly brought on by too much caffeine?

Coffeehouse in a high school library?

Seems like a bad idea as I ponder it over a medium Dunkin Donuts coffee with cream and sugar.

i love this! c'mon, is coffee any worse than all that crap in the vending machines?? I would have killed for a coffee bar in my high school--or college!--library.

not sure the librarians would be too keen on the idea though.

I think it's a great idea because so many people at my school bring Starbucks in the mornings anyway.....why not make some profit that can go toward the school by selling something that students will surely buy???

Selling coffee in the schools! Whats next Red-Bull bins and Rockstar Vending machines. By promoting caffeine in schools may lead to bad eating and sleep habits. I mean, who needs sleep when you can have 3 cups of joe instead.

I like this idea, in fact one of the colleges I graduated has a cafe set up between buildings, coffee really helped my 8:00 a.m. classes. Gave my brain a kick start and I felt smarter! More confidence with coffee? Yes. I wish all colleges could do this. It's a boon for the schools, and a little gab and gripe session is always a good way to get ready for a long day.
