American universities tilt to the political left - in our country’s leading institutions, Democrat faculty members outnumber Republicans 11.5 to 1. What implications might this have for academia, particularly during the Trump presidency? In conjunction with the release of the 2017 RHSU Edu-Scholar Public Influence Rankings, Education Week Commentary asked a number of education scholars to weigh in on this issue.
Rick Hess of the American Enterprise Institute writes in his essay that policymakers could sideline education scholarship as a result of this political bias.
“As I see things, the ability of education researchers to inform discussions of practice and policy is hampered by their community being so philosophically unrepresentative of the nation as a whole,” wrote Hess.
