Reducing Chronic Absenteeism: One District’s Success Strategy (Video)

For district officials tasked with keeping students engaged and on a path to graduation, addressing chronic absenteeism can seem like a particularly daunting challenge. But in Cleveland, efforts to encourage students to show up to school every day have reduced the absenteeism rate from 50 percent to 30 percent over the last two years.

In this PBS Newshour video, correspondent Kavitha Cardoza explores some of the strategies Cleveland’s officials are using to combat absenteeism, including free uniforms and bus passes, a PR campaign, and school visits from the NFL’s Cleveland Browns.
