Common Core State Standards: A Parent Primer

With the debate over the Common Core State Standards heating up nationally, Parents for Public Schools has issued a paper to inform parents about the education initiative.

Parents for Public Schools, which is based in Jackson, Miss., is a national organization that has as its goal to strengthen public schools by engaging, educating, and mobilizing parents.

"Parents for Public Schools believes that parents need information about CCSS so that they can ask their questions and form their opinions," the article states.

The paper outlines the origins of the common core and details the growing debate among Republican and Democratic lawmakers about the education reform effort. In addition, the group has created a pros and cons list, detailing proponents' and opponents' positions about the new standards.

Parents for Public Schools hopes to encourage parents to gain a greater understanding of the common core and to "make their voices heard" as the discussion continues. Meanwhile, the organization seeks a collaborative effort to ensure that the education initiative will be successful.

"We urge the federal government, state governments, and local school boards to continue to work together to implement CCSS in a way that will positively influence the quality of public education," the article states.
