Republican Sen. Rand Paul said that parents and not school districts should decide how federal dollars are spent to educate their children.

Paul made the remarks during an education roundtable at a Catholic school in Chicago this week, according to The Hill. Paul, who is considered a likely candidate for the presidency in 2016, also held another education roundtable in Milwaukee. He said the discussions were part of a process to find solutions to strengthen the American education system.

“Parents should have a role and a voice when it comes to their child’s education,” Paul told The Hill Tuesday.

Progress Illinois reports that Paul said Title I funds, which are federal dollars allocated to public schools serving low-income students, are being sent to schools district that “may not be deserving” of the investment. Instead, the Kentucky lawmaker said Title I funds should follow the student to the school of the parent’s choosing.
