Kids Outsmart Web Filters

MySpace and similar social networking Web sites can be dangerous places for kids. Reports of naive school children falling victim to cyber predators litter the news these days, cautioning parents and administrators to monitor and, in many cases, restrict access to protect young users. But kids are finding ways around the restrictions. Read more about kids' crafty workarounds in this article from CNET News.com.

The evidence for standards based reporting is very convincing. Students and parents in general are not educational researchers however and do not regularly read research. In adopting reports that give more information about progress towards standards, there is still a need to retain the traditional letter grade. Students and parents as well still cling to the apparent need for letter grade recognition. The all too important G.P.A. is still used as a measure of academic achievement and even college students are begging for that all important extra few points. The letter grade while not completely accurate, is still a measure that is understood nearly universally

The fact that these "crafty" kids are outsmarting web filters suggest that the technical knowledge of children is fast outpacing that of those that are attempting to "protect" them.
There is a plethora of news stories and specials on "internet predators', but it is worth noting that all of the "predators that have been caught by the media have actually been tricked or stung by adults pretending to be children. There is not nearly as much news about actual children making dates with web predators. I certainly do not mean to excuse the behavior of so many grown, usually men chasing after what they belive to be young girls on the internet, but it needs to be mentioned that these same men are being lured in by adults, not children. They are not only sick, they are also stupid.

I am posting this openly on behalf of BeNetSafe.com and I work with the company. The service offered by www.BeNetSafe.com searches for your child’s information on the Internet. If found, it reports in clear detail what information your child is leaving on the Internet, in public for all to see. This service was created by parents who happened to have a technical background and did not see an easy to use solution for ordinary parents trying to manage their children’s Internet safety. If you would like to try this or have any questions please call me at 888-400-4040. I will gladly give you a large discount code too if you can also give us feedback about the service. Ask for Christine or email me at Calton @ benetsafe.com. www.benetsafe.com
