Fergie Goes to School

It's good to be glamorous—of that, the students at Seattle's Franklin High School can have no doubt. Thanks to being named the West's "most glamorous high school" in a recent Verizon Wireless-sponsored contest, Franklin High was treated to a special concert by pop star Fergie (of Black Eyed Peas fame). "Franklin High School, you got styyyle!" Fergie told the crowd gathered in the school gym, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports. Franklin's principal worked with the singer's team to censor songs "not suitable for the school house." And Fergie herself acknowledged: "We're using the clean versions of the songs, definitely." The glamor contest was a promotion for Verizon's V CAST technology.

As a mother who's child may attend Franklin High in the future, I am dismayed that so much attention is being given to "fashion" — especially when the role model has been described by People.com as "a gyrating, belly-baring, real-life Bratz doll..." The students had to dress in Fergie "style" and send their photos to be posted on a website for appraisal. Doesn't our society make young women feel bad enough about their physical appearance without a high school participating in the process? I could see if design classes had to work on drawings, or if the school got much needed funds or supplies...but the entire thing is nothing more than a commercial promotion to benefit Verizon and Fergie. Let's keep commercialiam out of academic settings, please!

Who cares if they just wanted promotion, it was really fun! It was great for us to have her come to our school, we've gone through a lot this year and it's a good way to end it.
