Texas senior India Landry says she was forced to leave her high school after refusing to stand during the Pledge of Allegiance earlier this month, something she says she’s done for years, KHOU reports. Her family has sued the Cypress Fairbanks school district.
“I don’t think that the flag is what it says it’s for, for liberty and justice and all that,” India said, according to the station. “It’s not obviously what’s going on in America today.”
A spokesperson told several news outlets the district had not yet received the lawsuit over the weekend.
Landry said her quiet protest only became a problem recently, after President Donald Trump spoke out against professional athletes who kneel during the national anthem to protest racial injustice.
As I reported then, the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that public schools can’t compel students to participate in patriotic rituals.
Also this month, two teens were kicked off of a privately run football team after they refused to stand for the national anthem.
