Great new video from Roxanna Elden, who I profiled here last year, on how the “Myth of the Super-Teacher” hurts teachers and what novice teachers really need. As teacher evaluation and personnel decisions have moved to the forefront of policy debates of late, many of these policy conversations seem weirdly disconnected from the reality that these are actual people dealing with a host of mundane, practical challenges of engaging with a room full of children every day and trying to enable/prod/motivate/coerce them into learning. That’s a real weakness that undermines both the crafting of sound policy and efforts to communicate it to teachers. Elden’s work is a bracing antidote to that tendency and more policy types should be following her.
