Running and Teaching Have Plenty in Common, NBCT Suggests
Running and teaching may seem like two entirely different things, but they've got more in common than you might think, says National Board-certified teacher Wendy Pillars in the latest Teacher Leaders Network piece featured on Education Week Teacher.
Pillars recently went down this train of thought while running a half-marathon, and found 10 characteristics that running and teaching share.
I won't spoil the whole thing, but here are some highlights:
• Relating to students: Pillars says running can help teachers "strengthen relationships with students and model healthy behavior." For her, once students learned she was a runner, "a special kinship developed."
• Connecting with content: Running can be turned into a real-world lesson in almost any subject area, Pillars suggests. For instance, math comes into play when calculating your running pace and caloric intake vs. output, while running in new locations and map-reading can be a real-world geography lesson for students.
• Finding the tech sweet spot: Like the recent boom in education technology, runners also have an array of tech tools at their disposal these days. From pedometers to GPS tracking systems, heart-rate monitors to music-playing devices, runners must find their "comfort zone with technology," much like teachers do in the classroom.
