The tally of students with disabilities who attend private schools using vouchers is about 30,000 nationwide, a new report from the Alliance for School Choice says.
That’s about the tally I came up with for a story earlier this year about how some school choice advocates hope that providing vouchers for students with disabilities will pave the way for other types of tax-funded private school options.
The Allliance says there are 10 school choice programs just for students with disabilities, including the largest and one of the oldest, in Florida, and one that begins this fall in Ohio.
What’s less clear is how many students with disabilities are enrolled in private schools using vouchers that aren’t designed just for them. Last month, my colleague Sean Cavanagh wrote about one study that tried to quantify how many special education students use vouchers in Milwaukee.
