Former Maryland Superintendent of Schools Nancy S. Grasmick has accepted a job at Towson University, in Towson, Md., where she will take charge of efforts to change its teacher education programs, the university announced today.
Grasmick, who was superintendent of Maryland’s public schools from 1991 until last year when she retired, will serve as Towson’s Presidential Scholar for Innovation in Teacher and Leader Education, the university’s President Maravene Loeschke said March 13.
Grasmick will work with faculty and community members and leaders to redesign and implement new teacher education programs at Towson’s College of Education; engage the private sector in helping to expand opportunities for new teachers; and organize a series of public forums with national education leaders on topics including academic assessments and charter schools.
Until she retired on June 30, Grasmick had the distinction of being the nation’s longest-serving appointed state superintendent of education. Grasmick is also a graduate of Towson University, having received her bachelor’s degree there.
