Resistance To Weighted Student Funding In Chicago
Changing the way districts give out funding to schools so that the funds are more equitable and better targeted is a technocrat's dream, especially if it leads to a better distribution of highly qualified teachers and ends the hidden subsidy to schools with all-star faculties that has long plagued urban education. But, as this post from Chicago shows, changing funding schemes is no easy task. As reported in the February Catalyst Magazine, the district tried to pilot a change last year, only to be fought off, and is trying again this year.
