YOU HAD ME AT "#2"

Here's a discussion that only an educator could love. Of special note are the user-submitted commments, assuming you can make sense of such cryptic statements as "I wish Staedtler expanded their Ergosoft line so [it] encompass all grades from 6H to 8B."

And if you can make sense of this, I'd keep it to yourself.

I feel your pain about test prep but I'm unclear as to why you are unable to share your passion, love, study of poetry. When using to pieces for comparison in the test format, what prevents you from going beyond the test to show them the relevance, meaning and passion in the words?

No offense, but I'm not a lover of standardized assessments either, but I think we frequently use the "test" as an excuse for not teaching deeply and engaging students in meaningful experiences. As a teacher and trainer of teachers, I like to suggest that if the life has been sucked out of your classrooms....then take the straw out of your own mouth. Your practice is what you make of it and there will always be obstacles to overcome in our curriculum but it really is up to us how we deal with these obstacles to good teaching.
