WHEN THINGS COME TOGETHER

Vicki A. Davis at Cool Cat Teacher reports on her six-week odyssey moving from a manual system to an automated one: the PowerSchool system.

It was a long six weeks. But, says Ms. Davis:

Moving from manual systems to PowerSchool has gone relatively smoothly largely because of the amazing leadership from administration.

Ms. Davis outlines some detailed lessons she learned along the way, including reflections about ownership, communication, and empathy.

And, the proof is in the pudding.

When the teachers opened up the gradebook and already had rosters with parent names and phone numbers, squeals of delight filled the classroom!

Nothing a little "hard work, ownership, vision, and leadership" can't accomplish, she says.

I'm sure there were those teachers who were quite resistant to this new system. How did they fair?

Actually, Vicki, there were many teachers resistant as always. This is where administration came in. They are not so computer literate but they stood up in front of the teachers and said something like this, "I'm not so good on the computer but I'm going to training and I'm going to use it. It is the right thing to do, the research bears it out that better feedback to parents and students improves achievement. You are an incredible faculty and just as good as all of the others out there. We're all in this together, so let's do it."

Attitudes changed and thus far everyone is doing well. WE clearly communicated the flow chart and have manual backup while we are going.

It is tough to do anything new, but it helps to have a non-techie administrative type endorse it. Putting in an SIS is really an administrative decision and if it is handled as such it goes well. I guess you'll have to read my post for the rest!
