Bulletin Bored

The Teacher Voices from Teacher Leaders Network are chatting about bulletin boards—and exciting ways to use them. Although most of the Networks’ members agreed classroom bulletin boards should display student work and encourage interactive activities, Patty deviated from the group:

We were taught to minimize the amount of visual stimulation on the walls. We covered our boards with fabric in earth tones with no bright paper borders...
As an individual diagnosed as having ADHD, and as a teacher of many students with this label, I am amazed at the effect this has on concentration and focus. Sometimes the environment can just be too stimulating!

Teddi responded:

I know all about everything you have just posted, but I dutifully put up amazing, interactive "busy" bulletin boards every year IN MY CLASSROOM! And I am a special educator! Wow! What a disconnect for me. Soooo, as I prepare my "amazing" bulletin boards this year, they will be in a common area outside our room, and meaningful, subject related bulletin boards will be inside our walls.

Greetings Friends and Family,

As I write to you today, I am off work on temporary disability (Thanks to my good friends at Café Axe for helping me type this email). My doctor tells me that the most effective way to heal is to distract myself from the constant pain in my arms. So, my newest project involves working with Café Axe Cultural Center, located in downtown Oakland. The Center has operated on a shoestring budget for the last two years. At this point, we have had to lay off staff and are currently in danger of losing this amazing facility. Will you please make a donation to the Cultural Center? Any amount moves us towards our goal. In the last week we have raised over $3,000, but our goal is $10,000. We need your help!

The mission of Café Axe Cultural Center is to educate and support individuals and communities to empower them to work effectively and collaboratively, both locally and globally, to address issues of social justice and promote peace. The Center has an incredible program of workshops, activities and events as well as an art gallery and computer lab resource center. From direct nutritional counseling and healing to Filipino martial arts, the Center has something for everyone. Examples of our programming include: teen counseling, tutoring, youth groups, children's activities, women's groups, men's groups, racial awareness and diversity workshops, meditation classes, dance classes, photography, art classes and community murals. Please check out our myspace page at myspace.com/cafeaxeculture which is under construction.

I am delighted to be on board this project. I am fully committed to raising the necessary funds in the short term, as well as helping to craft a strategic plan that ensures the long-term funding and sustainability of this Cultural Center. We have a dedicated and talented group of individuals committed to effective programming and a broad-based vision of social justice. And I need your help to make this dream a reality. I encourage you to stretch and give as much as possible; can you write a check for $1,000 today? Anything you can give makes a huge difference. This isn't about charity. This is about working together and partnering to save an important organization providing vital services to our community. Please, don't hesitate to partner with me! If you would like to help out in some other way, please reply ASAP!
