Teary-eyed Breakthrough

Mr. McNamar of The Daily Grind got a little bit misty in class the other day, though to hear him tell it there was just something in his eye. There’s a student in his class that, despite being capable, loves to argue, storms out of the classroom, and even curses Mr. McNamar out on occasion. But, something happened recently that tugged at Mr. McNamar’s heartstrings.

I called on another student whose name doesn't even sound like this student's to read a long paragraph.
The difficult student started to read. I interrupted because I hadn't called on that student. But then I stopped. Wait. "Um, oh, did you want to read this paragraph?" I asked.
"Yes. I do," the student said.
So I let the student read. And the student read. The student made some errors but didn't quit, didn't get embarrassed.
Allegedly, I got teary eyed.

I think that this encounter is what makes you remember why you decided to become a teacher. It's important to understand that students come around in their own time on their own accord.

A teacher always has to be on his/her toes. A teachable moment can occur at any time or when it's least expected. In this case, it might have made the critical difference as to whether or not the struggling student will ever respond or show effort in the future.
