Nancie Atwell Speaks
Following up on my last post, Nancie Atwell, author of In the Middle and The Reading Zone and reading workshop queen, responds to the August 30th New York Times article, "A New Assignment: Pick Books You Like". In this video statement, Atwell addresses many of the myths about reading workshop and allowing students to choose their own books to read.

Thanks for sharing this. I never saw the Times article and think Nancy Atwell is an inspiration. I hope more people get her message. she knows what she is talking about. She has made a major impact in my approach to teaching. My students told me independent reading and book sharing was their favorite part of the class since they got to make their own choices.

A coworker shared this article with me before school started this year. I put the link on my class webpage to share with parents to help describe my approach to teaching their child reading and writing workshop-style.
Thanks for posting the link for others!

I was fortunate enough to be selected as an intern at Nancie's remarkable CTL school in Maine last fall. She is a remarkable teacher, and an even more remarkable person. This is her final year teaching-what a tremendous impact she has made on not only the teaching field, but on untold amounts of our next generation.
