Inside the Mind of This Coach: What Was I Thinking?!

“I wish I could just crawl inside your mind and see what happens when you coach,” said a participant at a recent training I did. This is a frequent request I receive and until technology advances, I’m limited to offering you the following:

First, watch this video of me coaching Manny. This was a role play. Manny was being a teacher who was really frustrated with his students about their poor homework turn in rates.

Then if you’d like to know what I was thinking and how I decided what to say, you can read this Transcript with Thoughts Elena Aguilar.pdf. It’s the text of what was said by both of us during the role play and my corresponding thoughts at each point.

I often get requests for seeing “real” coaching of me with a teacher or leader. Although I encourage coaches to record their practice and reflect on it alone or with trusted colleagues, I don’t record the conversations I have with clients for the purpose of sharing in my blogs or training. Sorry. It’s just a line I feel like I can’t cross. Role plays are a good alternative to the real thing.
