Despite $10 billion in new federal funding explicitly designed to save educator jobs, many teachers who’ve been laid off may not be called back to the classroom anytime soon, according a USA Today story. The paper explains that many districts aren’t sure when or if they’ll receive a portion of the funds. Others, citing continued economic uncertainty, plan to use their share to prevent further job cuts next spring rather than to re-hire already laid-off teachers. “It’s a real dilemma, because if you bring somebody back, you may have to lay them off again next year,” noted Jack Jennings, director of the Center on Education Policy.
