Back in 1994, UNESCO and Education International marked October 5 as World Teachers’ Day, a time to celebrate and appreciate the teaching profession all around the world. This year, the theme is “Teachers for gender equality.” The World Teachers’ Day website notes that “Despite the teaching profession being made up largely of women, inequality remains an issue,” and offers a Pay Equity toolkit.

The website also includes a photo gallery where you can share and view photos of schools in different countries celebrating teachers, a twitter feed, and an e-card section that allows students to send their teachers notes of gratitude and appreciation.

A gathering is also being held today at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris to commemorate the day and to discuss gender issues in the teaching force.
