How About a Little Googling, Class?

Our sister publication Digital Directions, as part of its coverage of the National Educational Computing Conference this week in D.C., provides this video clip of University of Michigan professor Elliot Soloway discussing the need for the effective use of technology in the classroom. Soloway believes that schools are failing to keep up with the transition from the industrial age to the era of "the knowledge worker" who relies exclusively on mobile devices. Because computers are just an add-on in schools, he argues, we are selling students short.

Incidentally, Soloway will be one of our guests on July 23rd, 4 pm ET, for our webinar, Cellphones as Instructional Tools. Join us.

A couple random thoughts:

Has Elliot ever taught a group of teenagers? Doesn't sound like he has any sense of what goes on.

I think we need to substitute "Information" for "Knowledge." Knowledge comes from the integration of information. I think technology can provide the information; instructors provide the skills that create knowledge.

What does a "Knowledge/Information" worker do and what devices do they need to do this? What do schools have to change to make this information/skill set available to them?

Don't you think it's a little condescending for Elliot to tell us what we know in our hearts?

I think there's a lot to think about in this brief presentation ... but there's a lot that seems to be left out.

The last e-learning conference I attended was turned into a farce when the speakers couldn't even get their PowerPoint presentations to work. Techies were hopping all over the place, and eventually order was restored. Translate this to a classroom full of restive kids, and you'll understand why the teaching profession is deaf to Prof Soloway's blandishments.
