Reflection on 2016's #OneWord: 'Metamorphosis'

Setbacks happen and that's okay, as long as I don't become mired in them. Change did happen in 2016... an actual metamorphosis of my teaching career as I've moved into the hybrid role of teacher and coach and I have no doubt that 2017 will continue that growth.

Students thrive in learning environments that value them as learners. The more control we relinquish to students in that learning process, the more we encourage them to own the outcomes that they progress toward. School shouldn't be about predetermined curricula and testing, it should be a student-directed/driven experience that empowers kids to embrace their successes and failures.

Using technology for the sake of using it serves little purpose, but once we make it an integral means of developing understanding it becomes essential. Students look to us as models of this usage, so the learning must begin on our laptops so we can show kids how to use these tools with proficiency.

Student Self-Assessment Practices That Work

Self-assessment is a valuable tool as it gives students the ability to really consider their learning and equally as importanly, share that understanding with the teacher. Once we understand what students know and can do, both demonstrated in the work and their ideas about the work, we can adjust instruction and/or class pacing as needed. The more adept students become with this tool, the better tailored class time and assessments can be.

The more involved and authentic we make end of year assessment of learning, the more engaged the students will be in their learning all year. Ownership of one's learning is an essential way of making learning more meaningful for each individual child and that's what we must shoot for as much as we can.

Deepen Reflection, Deepen Learning

Teachers can learn a lot from asking students to reflect and self-assess against the standards and we do the students and ourselves a disservice by not making it an expectation. Perhaps writing a reflection like this isn't appropriate for every class, maybe a video or voice recording would be better. Know your students and differentiate and scaffold reflections to best suit their individual needs.
