Never Stop Learning!!

I’ve had the fortunate opportunity to work in public education for 17 years and one thing that continues to amaze me is the number of educators that I meet who don’t believe in attending professional development unless they are paid to do so. I understand that as educators we are not paid the way professional athletes are but really, do we need to be paid every time we are asked to learn. To grow as an educator, one thing I always encourage professional educators to do is attend professional development opportunities to grow in their craft.

Professional Development should come from multiple sources. Lazy educators only attend required PDs that are offered by their school or district. Although this is very valuable, it is important to attend professional development from outside of your school and district. As a teacher, I always encouraged my students to pursue learning from other sources and never stop trying to learn more. I love learning and I love learning from others who work in other school districts and have the same professional responsibilities.

Next week, I will be attending the American Association for Employment in Education Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. This is an amazing conference that provides me both networking and learning opportunities related to the preparation, recruitment, support, and retention of teachers. I’ve learned so much from this conference that I attend annually for new trends in those areas. While I’m sitting in each session, I take notes and brainstorm on how I can improve my own professional daily practices. It is all about how can I implement this idea to better improve results in my school district.
